"Things are not visible because they exist; they are visible because they are seen.". ~Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus was an interesting photographer-Her work has provoked controversy for many because she photographed people she had considered flawed. Her photography can make you feel uncomfortablethough you cannot stop looking at it.  Here are a few more quotes from her.

My favorite thing is to go where I've never been.

A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.

#24 dream portrait wish

#24

I am entering this contest to try to capture a portrait of an amazing relationship between a brother and sister.  When my son was born we knew immediately he was all boy.  Rough, tough, and strong nothing could stop him.  My daughter was born two years later.  Tiny, quiet, and delicate just the opposite of her brother.  We were worried how this little ruffian would be with our family's new fragile addition.  Just before meeting, we sat down with him and explained that his new little sister was was not able to protect herself and his new job as big brother was to protect her.  As he sat on my bedside, we placed my daughter on his lap and introduced them for the first time.  To our surprise, with the most gentle touch a two year old could possibly have, he stroked her head and kissed her forehead.  The picture of that is my most prized possession.  It has been nine years now and he continues to protect her and the wonderful thing is that she does the same for him.  They are two very special children that have a very special bond.  I would love to have a portrait of their love for each other now as they did when they first met.

Entry #23 for the Wancket Studios dream portrait contest

I would like to enter my submission into the 25th year anniversary portrait contest.  I am 30 years old, married and have 2 loving, fun puppies.  My 5 year wedding anniversary is approaching, and I would love to have a portrait of my family as we are today (including my doggies!).  I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), which is a genetic condition, at 1 month old.  This condition affects many organs of the body including lungs, pancreas, and liver.  The main effects of CF include chronic lung infections, lung tissue damage and digestive issues.  As a child, I was in the hospital about every year to be treated for lung infections.  During high school, my condition stablized.  During college, I met my wonderful husband and CF decided to show its ugly head.  After college, I was in the hospital yearly for lung infections and my lung function dropped to 50% of normal capacity.  My husband (then boyfriend) stuck with me through all of this and proposed marriage in July 2005.  We were married on 9/16/2006.  About 2 years after we were married, my lung function plummeted even more.  I ended up having to have surgery to remove one lobe of my lung due to infection and I am now using oxygen 24/7. I had to stop doing a lot of the physical activities we enjoyed (skiing, biking, hiking, travelling).  My lung function is now about 27% of normal capacity.  I am also currently listed and waiting for a double lung transplant and on disability from my job.  Through all of this, my husband has been by my side, has been my rock, and I want to do something to preserve where we are in life today, since we are unsure what the future holds.

I know this sounds like a sob story, however, I do enjoy life.  I feel lucky to be alive and I can't wait for this adventure called life to continue after my lung transplant.  I love to help people and after transplant I would like to get into patient advocacy.  I have an amazing family that keeps me positive and happy and I want to have something to look back on to remember the important things in life - love, family and laughter.

Dream wish portrait story #22

# 22
First and foremost congratulations on 25 years your pictures explain the reason why you are still going strong they are much more than just a picture or a memory they are truly art!

I don’t have much of a story at all but do have a dream to get my 18th month old daughters pictures professionally done either alone or with me and her father. We currently do not have any pictures of the 3 of us as a family and the only time she has had her own pictures done somewhat professionally was when she was 2 days old in the hospital. Taking a look at a lot of family’s around me they have done 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, and 1 year pictures along with holiday’s and other special event’s, I’ve always wanted to be one of those people but can’t financially do so. I know it will probably upset me down the road but there is nothing I can do about it. This would be an absolute gift to me and my family to treasure for years to come.

"Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things." ~Robert Brault

I like to remind my self of this from time to time... Even in my portrait work.

Have a great week!

dream wish #21 Wancket Studios contest

#21

We had our family portrait done at your studio several years ago and those pictures are now adorning several rooms in our home!  I know you do wonderful work and I would love for a family I know to be able to receive a "Dream Portrait".

I'm not going to be elaborate or flowery in this request, but to say a family portrait would mean a lot to this family at this time.  You see, my friend is a single mom with two children ages 17 and 13.  The 17 year old young man was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January, 2010.  He went through surgery, radiation and chemo and continued to keep up with his challenging high school classes along the way.  With all the doctor appointments, hospital visits, medical complications, pain and sickness, along with missed school days and activities, this young man never complained once!  He was back on track to finish his senior year in high school this fall, when another tumor was discovered during a routine checkup.  He recently had another surgery and follow up treatment is now being determined.  I feel a family portrait would be something they would treasure at this time, as their little family has been through a lot.

Entry#20 for the Wancket Studios dream portrait contest

#20

I would like to enter my sister and I for the dream photo. My sister is my best friend. She is a smart, beautiful, caring and wholesome individual. She is everything I envisioned myself being at her age and I am so proud of her. This year she will be a senior and has plans to attend college after graduation. I know once she starts to follow her dreams we won't be able to spend as much time together as we do now. So my dream photo would be just the two of us, that way no matter how far apart we are we can look at it and think of all the good times and stay close to each other’s heart.
