My sister and I are emotionally very close; unfortunately, we live very far from one another. She lives in California and I live here in Illinois. Even though we talk on the phone all quite a bit, we only really get to see one another, at most, a couple times a year. I would love to have Audrey take a portrait of the two of us that captures our relationship.

I absolutely love Audrey’s Facebook album titled “Pets Are People Too”. This is exactly how I feel about my animals. I think this is particularly true about my cat. Sometimes I think she is more human than feline. She talks to me and like all females, she lets me know what she wants and she will nag me until she gets it. She even picks her food up with her paws and eats sitting up. It’s simultaneously, amazing, cute and pathetic. Even though she doesn’t like riding in the car, because she thinks she’s going to the vet, she is very personable and I think she would love having her portrait taken.

When my husband and I planned our future together before we were married in December of 1979 the desire for a large family with 6 children was top on the list. We had our first son just 10 months after we were married. We had not anticipated starting our family that soon but having a child on our first anniversary seemed so right. Ten months later I was pregnant again and so May of 1982 I had my second son. He was 8 pounds 14 ounces, a very healthy weight but unfortunately he had an ill heart. He was transported into two hospitals by two ambulances and after having two heart surgeries he died in the recovery of the second surgery. Since I had had a cescerean section I wasn't able to be with him through his horrible ordeal. I never even got a chance to hold him. It was devastating beyond words. To add to the grief, I was no longer able to have any more children.
During the summer of the following year, my husband and I were told of a seventeen year old that was pregnant and looking for a loving family to raise her child. We were introduced to the girl along with her mother at their house. They asked questions and watched our son, then 2 and half years old, play. We also asked questions, most importantly, how sure were they of this decision since I could not go through losing another child. Both of them assured us that they would never change their minds and do that to me.
It was September 29th 1983, a Thursday, when we got that wonderful phone call. We rushed to the hospital about an hour's drive and when we arrived we were welcomed as the new parents of this little baby girl. We both held her in the nursery.
The next day we took her home as our own. That day remains in my mind vividly, the excitement I felt was incredible! She was tiny but perfect. She had lots of light brown hair that highlighted her soft features. I remember acting a bit crazy with happiness, proclaiming to everyone I met that I had just adopted a baby girl. That night I couldn't sleep, constantly getting out of bed to make sure she was still breathing.
It had been 16 months since I gave birth to my second son. My hormones were now very much aware of this new life next to me. By Saturday I was able to nurse her. What an amazing experience! We were truly bonding.
On Sunday my family had a welcoming shower at their house in Chicago. That evening we received the phone call. The girl wanted her baby back. I just screamed! This couldn't be, they promised us they wouldn't do this to me. But we were wrong. We had no choice but to give her back.
Although many years have passed I wonder from time to time, what kind of life she has? Is she happy? I will never know. I doubt she will ever know of my existence. I was told about a year later that her mother gave her to her older sister. I hope she is happy.
As for me, I felt great joy when I was finally able to hold my own little granddaughter on April 22, 2009. My arms ached very long for that moment. My granddaughter has been sheer joy to my life. On February 8th of this year my second granddaughter was born. Another bundle of joy!
Before my next generation started my daughter-in-law and I have had numerous conversations about how wonderful it would be to have a family portrait at Wancket Studios. Audrey’s portraits stand out significantly from all of the rest. Now we have that family of 6 that we so much wanted! Our son and his wife, our two grandbabies and us. This is our dream.

I'm writing in to the dream portrait contest for the wonderful 25 year anniversary of Wancket Studios! I'm submitting one of my good friends for this contest. She is due any day with a beautiful baby girl who's father is from the Dominican Republic. My friend has been trying for the past year to get a fiance visa for him to come to the U.S. But because of the tough process to obtain a visa, he is unable to be here for the birth of his daughter. Even though is he so far away he tries to be involved with my friends pregnancy. They skype almost every day and keep in touch. They have met each others family over skype and he keeps tabs on her progression thru skype. She has been to the Dominican a few times, once while she was pregnant. His family down there is overjoyed about a baby entering their family and just wish they were all closer. Once the process for the visa is finished, which will be after the baby's birth, he will finally get to come to this country to be with his baby girl and fiance. That day, once its here will be a day great for the family. All 3 of them reunited in the United States is something to cherish and celebrate! The journey of getting him here to this country has been a process much too long. I want to have this dream portrait for my friend so she has that special memory in photograph to keep forever.
